![]() The huntsman is shocked, but obeys the queen because he’s just so damn loyal. So the queen decides that the only thing to be done is to have her trusted huntsman murder Snow and deliver her heart to the queen as proof. Although Snow’s romance is pretty innocent, I would argue that this is the day when Snow begins her journey from girlhood to womanhood, and that her beauty surpassing the queen’s really reflects her sexual maturity – she’s now old enough for marriage. ![]() He falls in love with her, and Snow falls right back in love with him.īut disaster strikes when the queen’s mirror informs her that Snow has become more beautiful than her! Gasp! And my analytical side would just like to point out that Snow becomes most beautiful on the very day she falls in love. ![]() Why is there a prince who is clearly not from her kingdom riding by the castle with seemingly no motivation? Nobody knows! But then again, it’s not like anybody really cares. Things start looking up for Snow when a handsome prince just happens to ride by her castle and hear her annoying lovely voice and immediately falls in love with her. It’s also established that she spends all of her time either cleaning or daydreaming about true love, which, oddly enough, doesn’t change for the entire movie. Also within the first few minutes, we meet Snow herself, who is as young and innocent an ingénue as you could possibly hope for. Within the first few minutes of the film, it’s established that the queen is a vain and jealous woman who has a magic mirror, dislikes Snow because she’s pretty, and because of this makes Snow wear rags and clean the castle. They cut out the whole bit about Snow’s mother wishing for a daughter with Snow’s features and skip straight to the Evil Queen being evil. The plot’s pretty basic, and it actually moves along at a pretty swift rate at first. You can tell, just by looking, the amount of effort that went into this film.Īnyways, I suppose I should talk about the story now. This is just not the type of stuff you usually see in Silly Symphonies. Once again, I don’t know much about it, but damn, just look at it! Look! It looks freaking amazing when I compare it to the Silly Symphonies. Her music night with the dwarfs not only seemed fun, but it was amazing to watch Snow White’s graceful and realistic looking dancing next to Dopey’s cartoonish movements. I was simply blown away when I watched Snow White fleeing through the forest. The thing is, while a good majority of this movie is filler, even the filler becomes amazing to look at when you consider the animation. Now, imagine the only animation you’ve ever seen has been really cartoonish shorts. I’ve heard it mentioned several times how Snow White is really one of the first pieces of animation to feature realistic human design and movement, and when you’ve been watching a bunch of really cartoonish shorts for five months, it really shows. I don’t know a lot about animation, but I want to start my discussion of Snow White there. And I can’t even describe how amazing, how refreshing, how beautiful and impressive Snow White seems in comparison. I’ve been watching Silly Symphonies for the past five months. ![]() So while I admittedly was excited to watch Disney’s first full-length feature, I was also not too excited. And I remembered Snow White’s voice, and how irritating that was too. Basically, I mainly remembered how irritated I was that I had to watch that turtle inching along behind everyone and that it was supposed to be funny. I also watched it for the first time on the same day as I watched Beauty and the Beast for the first time and…really, you can’t expect Snow White to compete. But to be perfectly honest, I was rather underwhelmed the first time I saw this thing. What can I say, it’s kind of what I do, right? I also have a strong suspicion that my mother avoided getting it for me and my sister because she couldn’t stand Snow White’s singing voice. The first time I watched it I was eighteen, and the only reason was so that I could write a paper on absent mothers in Disney princess films. The Blue-Ray and DVD cover of Snow White. This version was released in 2009. One of the original posters for Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, released in 1937.
